imply, infer
Do not use these verbs interchangeably. Imply means "to suggest without stating directly," in other words, "to hint." Infer means "to come to a conclusion based on facts or reasoning."
The tone of her voice implied that she thought him stupid.
The anthropologist inferred that what they had found was a prehistoric burial site.
